Often dubbed the ‘Galapagos of the Indian Ocean,’ Socotra is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The island offers a sanctuary to explore distinctive flora and fauna, along with breathtaking landscapes featuring white sandy beaches and azure waters.

How to Get to Socotra

Getting to Socotra can pose a challenge as it’s not as simple as booking a regular flight independently.

One of the most common questions I receive from readers and social media followers is how to get to Socotra.

My visit in 2013 was seamless, just before conflict erupted in mainland Yemen, leaving me eager to return. However, traveling to Socotra has become increasingly arduous since 2015, almost bordering on the impossible.

In March 2021, a glimmer of hope emerged when Air Arabia announced a new route linking Abu Dhabi and Socotra.

While reaching Socotra is no longer as straightforward as it once was, with various hurdles to overcome, it remains achievable.

The Yemenia Flight from Cairo operates once a week, departing on Sunday from Cairo to Aden, Yemen, before continuing to Socotra on Monday morning.

Notably, this route mandates a permit from the Yemeni Ministry of Interior, a process that your local operator, through whom you’ve booked your trip, should be able to handle with advance notice.

As of April 2023, there are two flight choices to reach Socotra:

• One from Cairo, involving a brief layover in mainland Yemen;
• Another from Abu Dhabi, providing a direct flight to Socotra Airport.

For your return journey, entrusting your tour operator to manage flight arrangements is advisable. They will require your invitation letter, a copy of your passport, and Yemeni visa to issue your ticket promptly.

It’s crucial to remain flexible when traveling to or from Socotra, as plans can swiftly change. Even if you’re en route or have already arrived, unexpected alterations can occur.

How to Book the Flight to Socotra

You may have attempted to search for the flight online using platforms like Skyscanner without success.

This flight cannot be reserved online, making it the sole option for foreigners seeking to travel to Socotra.

Securing this flight requires obtaining your Yemeni visa first and is exclusively achievable through a travel agent.

The agent can secure your seats (reservation) temporarily as your visas undergo processing. Subsequently, upon payment, e-tickets will be issued.

To board the flight to Socotra from Abu Dhabi, you must possess a printed copy of both your visa and ticket for check-in at the airport.

Given the single flight connection between Abu Dhabi and Yemen, seats tend to fill up swiftly. Despite the limited tourist presence on these flights, many Yemeni nationals frequently travel for medical treatments.

Best Time to Visit Socotra

Tourism on Socotra Island typically operates between October and May, as the island experiences the powerful monsoon season from June to September.

The optimal times to visit in terms of weather are March/April or October/November. May can become uncomfortably hot, while December tends to be a bit rainy.

The exhilarating descent via sliding down the dune added a playful touch to the experience. Arher Beach serves as an idyllic camping spot, offering a serene night under the stars and a refreshing morning dip in the pristine waters.

3. Dive into the Spectacular Coral Reefs

Immerse yourself in the mesmerizing underwater realm at Dihamri Marine Reserve, a premier snorkeling destination on Socotra.

Delve into a vibrant world teeming with colorful coral reefs and a diverse array of marine creatures awaiting your exploration.

For those without their snorkeling gear, worry not as you can conveniently rent equipment from the small dive shop for approximately $5.

Dihamri Marine Reserve also serves as an excellent camping site, serving as my first camping location during the journey.

This cave extends 3 kilometers deep, inviting visitors to venture up to 1 kilometer inside its depths.

Located near Saqra village, Hoq Cave is a strikingly beautiful natural wonder filled with awe-inspiring stalagmites and stalactites, sculpted over millennia. A visit to this cave is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Socotra.

The two-hour hike to the cave entrance rewards you with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and coastline. But it’s the sheer magnitude and depth of Hoq Cave that truly impresses.

As you venture deeper, the temperature gradually turns more humid, culminating in a terraced plateau where water fills the deepest point.

While many consider Hoq Cave the island’s largest, locals hint at even grander caves hidden away, less accessible to tourists.

Ensure you carry an ample supply of drinking water for this excursion! The challenging ascent up the hill to Hoq Cave is undeniably rewarding, but it’s advisable to start early. The hike typically takes between 60-90 minutes, depending on your fitness level.

5. Explore Erissel Fishing Village

Situated near Arher Beach on the eastern side of the island, Erissel is a quaint fishing village.

In the evening, you’ll witness local fishermen returning from their day’s toil in their fishing boats, bringing in the day’s catch.

Additionally, you may chance upon local children fishing from the end of the pier or taking refreshing dives into the sea.

The shoreline near Erissel Fishing Village is adorned with what seems like a collection of deceased pufferfish.

Caution is advised as these fish are covered in sharp spines that can cause considerable discomfort if stepped on accidentally.

Hadiboh stands as the primary city of Socotra, serving as the sole location on the island with a hotel and a single ATM. Visitors of the city are greeted by friendly goats ambling along the streets.

Regrettably, due to the ongoing unrest in mainland Yemen, Hadiboh lacks proper waste management services, resulting in streets marred by accumulated refuse.

Despite the city’s challenges, a stroll through Hadiboh offers a unique cultural immersion vastly different from most urban centers.

Amidst the less appealing aspects, there exists a hidden charm within Hadiboh.

I found myself captivated by the ornate doors adorning the city, crafted by a local artisan.

There are several notable sights to explore, including a bustling market offering souvenir shopping opportunities. However, Hadiboh presents a blend of cultural experiences and unexpected beauty waiting to be discovered amidst its distinctive urban scenery.

7. Discover Shu’ab Beach

Accessing Shu’ab Beach requires a boat journey, typically coordinated by your tour guide based in Qalansiah.

To ensure a tranquil experience, it’s advisable to request an early departure to secure a serene arrival, as the beach can become quite crowded later in the day.

Upon reaching the beach, a lineup of boatmen eagerly awaits your arrival. They swiftly usher you onto a dhow for a picturesque voyage along the stunning rocky coastline and through the crystalline waters. Keep a keen eye out for stingrays and various marine life as you glide towards Shu’ab Beach.

Be on the lookout for freshwater crabs in the rock pools, and note that the Infinity Pool’s water level fluctuates seasonally.

During wetter months, the pool rises, living up to its name, while in drier periods like April, the water levels may be lower.

The mention of Detwah Beach conjures images of pristine blue waters, a solitary white sandy shoreline, untouched by crowds.

Isolated by a small rocky peninsula from the town of Qalansiah, the beach appears abandoned, offering a tranquil escape.

While snorkeling opportunities are limited, the swimming experience is undisturbed and serene. Don’t forget your sunglasses, hat, and a good book.

Towards the rear of the lagoon, a designated campsite attracts tour guides and groups in the evenings, yet the majority of Detwah Beach remains tranquil.

Located on the rugged Southern Indian Ocean side of Socotra, the Zahek sand dunes offer a unique coastal landscape with waves breaking upon the beaches.

These sand dunes extend approximately one kilometer towards the sea, with two designated campsites positioned along this stretch. One adjacent to the dunes and the other situated further west.

In the months of April to May, visitors may witness the awe-inspiring sight of turtles arriving to nest and lay their eggs along this shoreline.
