The United States boasts a vast and diverse landscape, offering an ideal setting for unforgettable road trips. Whether you prefer coastal drives, mountain vistas, or historical sites, there is no shortage of beautiful road trips in the USA to suit every taste.
Having been fortunate enough to embark on two cross-country road trips and numerous one-week excursions in the USA, I can attest to the country’s abundant offerings. Given its immense size and variety, driving presents an excellent means to explore numerous destinations within a short timeframe.
Below, I outline the 19 best road trips in the USA, categorized for your convenience.
Please note that I have personally undertaken many of these journeys within a week. While most of the itineraries below are tailored for one-week road trips, they can easily be combined based on your location within the United States or if you opt to fly between coasts. I have included regional information to simplify the planning process, should that be beneficial to you.
19 Best Road Trips in the USA to Put on Your Bucket List
Tips for Planning a Successful Road Trip in the USA
Conduct thorough research on attractions, accommodations, and potential stops along your route. Also, allow room for spontaneity and detours to uncover hidden gems.
My suggested approach involves selecting key locations to stay and outlining a few must-see activities in each area.
While it’s beneficial to have additional ideas for activities, avoid overloading your itinerary to ensure you have the flexibility to stumble upon new discoveries along the way!
How to Rent a Car in the USA
Renting a car in the United States is generally a straightforward process, but it’s essential to be mindful of specific requirements and considerations.
Here are some useful tips to assist you in navigating the car rental procedure in the USA:
Ensure you possess a valid driver’s license from your home country. International visitors can utilize their home country’s driver’s license if it is in English. Otherwise, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be necessary.
Many companies provide a car with a full tank of gas and expect it to be returned with a full tank. While some offer a prepaid fuel option, it’s often more economical to refill the tank yourself.
The minimum age for car rentals varies by company and state, typically falling between 21 and 25 years. Drivers under 25 might face a “young driver” surcharge. Verify the policies of the car rental company you choose, as fees differ.
A credit card under the renter’s name is typically mandatory for both reservation and payment. While some companies may accept debit cards, there will be a significant hold, often exceeding $1000. When using a credit card, you can still expect a hold of around $200. It’s advisable to confirm the specific requirements of the company you select, as charges may vary.
Prominent car rental agencies in the U.S. include Avis, Enterprise, Hertz, and Alamo. Prior to booking, compare prices, terms, and customer feedback. I have discovered the best deals by booking through Southwest Airlines or utilizing Turo.
I recommend making reservations in advance, particularly during peak travel seasons. This ensures you secure the desired vehicle type at the most favorable rate.
While car rental firms do not mandate insurance purchase, damages from even minor accidents can exceed $1000. Rental car insurance options entail a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Liability Insurance.
If multiple individuals will be driving the rental car, additional drivers might need to be included in the rental agreement, typically incurring an extra fee for each driver.
Take note of mileage restrictions, return guidelines, and any supplementary charges. Most conventional rental car agencies offer unlimited mileage.
Before departing the rental location, conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle for any pre-existing damage. Make a detailed record of any scratches, dents, or issues and report them to the rental company to prevent liability.
Ensure the car is returned punctually to avoid additional fees. Refill the tank to the agreed-upon level and return the vehicle in the same condition as received.
Should you require it, you can request a GPS or other supplementary equipment. Keep in mind that these amenities may involve extra costs.

I embarked on a Pacific Coast Highway road trip over five years ago, and it still holds a special place as one of my favorite road trips in the USA.
The Pacific Coast Highway, also known as California State Route 1, stretches from north to south, spanning from Leggett to Dana Point.
The classic Pacific Coast Highway road trip typically runs from San Francisco to Los Angeles. However, you have the flexibility to extend the route to include San Diego in the south or continue northward into Northern California.

The stretch between San Francisco and Los Angeles, winding through the picturesque coastal landscape of Big Sur, stands out as one of the most breathtaking drives in the country.
Although the drive covers approximately 8 to 10 hours, many travelers opt to break the journey into multiple days, with overnight stays in Santa Barbara, Solvang, Morro Bay, and/or Monterey.
Additionally, there are numerous captivating destinations nearby that can complement this road trip. Napa Valley, Pinnacles National Park, and San Diego are all excellent additions to a Pacific Coast Highway adventure.

New England road trip from Acadia National Park to Boston is high on my list of best road trips in USA. Having visited both Acadia National Park and Boston, the starting and ending points of this itinerary, I cherished those experiences.
The inhabitants of the New England region take immense pride in their identity. There are certain things you simply do not criticize in their presence.
Dunkin’ Donuts, lobster rolls, Tom Brady—any hint of negativity towards these can quickly irk a local.
However, one of the most cherished natural wonders that defines the New Englander essence is the vibrant fall foliage.
From late September to mid-October, the fervor around the changing colors of the trees often overshadows even discussions about the Patriots. Until they inevitably make it to the Super Bowl.
New Englanders are captivated by the reds, oranges, and golds of the season. Some even plan entire weekend getaways to witness the finest displays. Undeniably, the spectacle of these hues striking you as you venture beyond Boston is truly remarkable.
Among the most renowned fall foliage drives in New England is the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire.
During the optimal time in early October, a cold snap sweeps the hills, igniting them with a riot of colors.
The 56-mile expanse of the Kancamagus Highway is an endless panorama of foliage and ever-shifting hues. It feels like traveling through a kaleidoscope. Just a heads up: expect crowds—October can get quite bustling!

Along the way, you can visit state parks, pristine beaches, wildlife conservation centers, breweries, and quaint boutiques. Indulge in al fresco dining, beachside meals, and relaxing under the shade of palm trees.

As indicated in the subtitle of this particular USA road trip, most of these beaches are accessible via a single highway.
The Florida A1A spans the entire length of the Atlantic Floridian Coast and extends further into the Caribbean Sea.
The segment connecting the mainland to the Florida Keys (The Florida Key Scenic Byway) is revered as an engineering marvel, serving as a highlight of the journey.
Gliding over the Caribbean and reaching destinations like Ernest Hemingway’s abode in Key West is a truly rewarding experience.
Beyond the Keys, this Florida road trip unveils more treasures. Fort Lauderdale is shedding its MTV beach party image for a more laid-back vibe, while Cocoa Beach and Vero Beach remain surfing havens.

Love this list! Numbers 3 and 7 are on my bucket list… I got to do part of Route 66 last March and it was fun. I’d love to just spend all my time road trippin’ around Canada and the USA!

Hi Gail! My pleasure, thanks for stopping by!
Yup, Route 66 is amazing! While one week is far too short to actually discover Route 66, I wasn’t lucky enough to appreciate it to the fullest. Hopefully, I will drive the entire route this summer.

Some great trips here. There are so many possibilities for road trips around the US. I like doing road trips around a theme.

Reading this makes me want to get out on the road. I loved driving in upstate New York and think road trips bring wonderful insights into small town America.

I can relate! Yup, that’s true. I really enjoyed my trip through New England and I’d like to do some alternate routes!

I’ve done a lot of traveling up the eats coast but honestly never taken a trip out west. I’ve always wanted to do the pacific coast trip and to be able to do it one day. My favorite road trip has always been the east coast of Florida trip. I love and Florida and have take A1A from Jacksonville to key west many times. It’s a beautiful trip and there’s just something so cool about taking that drive over the bridge connecting the tip of Florida to the keys. Getting to see the Atlantic Ocean our of one side of the car and the Gulf of Mexico through the other.

Hey Magen! I love the Overseas Highway and I totally agree abour the keys – they are so charming!

I want to visit each and every one of these places! My cousin and I were talking about going to see the Redwood Forest, nature just amazes me.

I love road-tripping, either with my sister or alone. I have done the entire Arizona stretch of Route 66 and would love to the do the rest. And I have wanted to do that drive to the Keys forever. Maybe this year, in the fall. Thanks for the inspiration.

My husband and I love a good road trip and there is no better place than the United States to do one, the options and routes are endless! I was so excited to see California made the list because that is what we will be doing this summer!
